I'm giving this post the option of being an addition AND/OR a replacement to your regular routine. You'll see why.
Lemon water. I feel this this is one of those givens. One of those things that we've heard the doctors and dietitians on TV tell us. One of those things that we know is a good choice for us. Yet so many of us (myself included) prefer to ignore it and go with more delicious (and unhealthy) choices. For example: soda, coffee (I love coffee, but it's not good for you when you load it down with cream and sugar), flavored waters (artificial sweeteners are BAD, BAD, BAD, PEOPLE!), sports drinks, lattes, bottled fancy coffee drinks... The list goes on. For some reason, we push the water away when we know that it's the easiest and healthiest option.
Here's what water with some fresh-squeezed lemon can do for you if you drink it in the morning. It kick starts your metabolism and gives you energy. It cleans the liver and prepares it for all the messed up stuff that we plan on running through it later on in the day. It's zero calories. It's jam-packed with vitamin C which, in my opinion, is one of the greatest natural healers out there. On numerous websites and blogs, I've read that it's helped people quit drinking copious amounts of coffee in the morning. (Here is one of those websites. Read #10. And just to let you know, I myself do not plan on ever being done with coffee because I'm in love with it.)
As for later in the day? Well, we've all heard the advice that we should drink glasses of water daily. So I mean, really, you should be drinking mostly water when you intake liquids anyway, right? Well. Here's another good reason. 20 oz. of lemon water has 0 calories. 20 oz. of a popular brand of cherry cola has 260 calories. HOLY CRAP, RIGHT!? I love soda. I drink it from time to time. But never, never, NEVER will I get back into the habit of drinking a soda a day or multiple sodas a day. And there is no argument for diet soda either. Both diet soda and regular soda are full of sodium and other stuff that our bodies not only don't need, but don't understand how to digest.
One last thing... Raw lemons (even those of the organic persuasion) are next to nothing in price. So there's no argument. Two days worth of lemon water (that's one slice per glass at eight glasses per day) will cost you between 50 cents and $2 (depending on how fancy and organic you want your lemons to be.) This is with a water filtration system, not those pesky and expensive bottles.
My suggestion? Have one pint of lemon water before you eat or drink anything else in the morning. Next time you eat at a restaurant, get a (FREE) water with a slice of lemon instead of a $2 calorie-laden soda. Easy-peasy!
Have a good weekend, friends!
